Snape is a repressed, solitary man with no friends. In his early life, he was insecure, vulnerable and yearned to be part of something better. As a child, the bleak mundanity of working-class suburbia compounded with his neglectful Muggle father inspired in him a contempt for ordinariness. This urgent desire to be a part of something powerful and important was what drew him to Lord Voldemort's inner circle. Snape's bitterness and resentment towards the world was exacerbated even more by the relentless bullying he endured in school, causing him to shut himself in even more.
Snape is a formidable sorcerer, displaying consummate skill in many different branches of magic. His extensive knowledge and abilities are rivalled by very few, if any other witches and wizards of his age. Snape is also unusually cerebral for a wizard, possessing a subtle and keenly analytical mind. Ultimately, it is Snape's past and his love for Lily Evans that defines his inner being. He suffered terrible remorse for what he had done and spent the best part of his life trying to protect her son, now the war is over Snape has become a recluse.
Once the snake attacked Snape, he lay dying in a pool of his own blood contemplating the events of his life and his mistakes. He did not realise a healer came to his aid, he saw a vision of female figure, a mere figment of Lily in his imagination taking him into the afterlife. Hours later after the war had ended and the castle fell into silence, Snape woke up realising he had been given a second chance, a salvation if you will. After Potter proved his innocence and that his allegiance lay with Dumbeldore he formally resigned as headmaster. Snape took off on journeys and adventures trying to find what he lost when Lily died, now back in Spinner's End he is ready to move on with his life.
